During the academic semesters, OURS holds 3 programs each week, including Monday Mentoring, Tuesday Teen & 'Tween Leadership Council, and Friday Fun for All Ages. In addition, programs are offered during student breaks and during the summer. These programs are held on-site in the mobile home parks or out in the local community, and are generally oriented toward service-learning, team-building, outdoor activity and environmental appreciation, or involve educational field trips to work with presenters from local agencies. About 35 youth, ages 7-17, participate each year and most participate in at least two programs each week during the school year as well as during the summer and school breaks.
Mentoring: Mondays, 5:00 - 6:30 pm
Mentoring pairs each youth up with one volunteer to focus on
academic improvement by going over homework and working on areas
where the youth needs the most support. There is also time for educational recreational activities between the mentor and youth to
build behavioral and social skills. Another goal of mentoring is to
develop a trusting relationship with an adult that will build
self-esteem, refine strengths, and improve weaknesses.
Teen and 'Tween Leadership Council: Tuesdays, 5:00 - 6:30 pm
The Thursday Teen and 'Tween Leadership Council provides the opportunity for
older OURS youth to work together as a team in order to solve
real issues in their community through discussions, community
service-learning, and event planning. Teen Leadership Council youth
are expected to take on leadership roles within their peer group and
in their community, so a high level of maturity and motivation are
required. Planning, discussion and team-building activities take
place at 4-H Acres from 5:00-6:30pm Tuesday nights, but youth are
encouraged to attend other events and community service activities
happening out in the community, for which transportation may be
provided by Cornell Cooperative Extension and the OURS & YOURS program
Fun Fridays: Friday, 5:00 - 6:30 pm
Fun Friday for All Ages is an experiential learning program based on a 3-progject model that includes nutritious cooking, arts & crafts, and fitness. Since it is on Fridays, we are all about having fun, and
learning through play. There are always several activities taking
place at the same time so that the kids always have options. These
activities help the youth to realize and develop their talents and
interests.
